Notes from various Foldscope workshops in India

Recently, thanks to Manu and the foldscope team, Vaishnavi and I had the opportunity to conduct multiple workshops in India. I thought I’d share some of our experiences on our community page.  The idea of these workshops was to work with small groups of people and expose them to a whole range of foldscope tricks so that…

My father and I went to Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh (India) to hold a foldscope workshop for rural kids at the Agastya International Foundation (AIF) on the 11th of August. We went there with the wildlife expert Dr. R Bhanumathi. We had 36 people in total, 21 students and 15 teachers. We split the group into two: 18 with my…

Confessions of a scientist (plus Foldscope assembly instructions)

Last weekend, my older daughter and I assembled the Foldscope and instantly started exploring slides with our own tooth plaque and a flower petal. The entire experience was 99.95% positive, but there are two embarrassing aspects. Confession #1 I am a scientist and have plenty of experience with microscopes. I spent 6 years of graduate…

How to Find Tardigrades (Water Bears) in Your Own Backyard

Tardigrades, also known as Water Bears or Space Bears, are incredible members of the microcosmos that can be found just about anywhere in the world. These eight-legged invertebrates are only 0.1-1mm long, yet they are certainly the world’s toughest animals! Just how tough are they? They have been shown to survive temperatures as low as…

Foldscope at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia

Diffusion of scientific and discoveries and innovations constitute one of the most important processes for the massification of these for all communities worldwide. It is for this reason that it results very fascinating to generate an integration of knowledge and ideas around objects that could facilitate a better understanding of our environment.

Ant on a wire (hair)

I love tools. The right tool for the right job makes all the difference. But sometimes you have to invent tools. And that’s so much fun; since if it does not work well – you can blame yourself and start all over again.  Here I share a simple method to mount small insects (say an…

Identifying ciliates – guide key

It’s a thrill to find an organism in a natural setting ; and wonder if it’s something science and human society knows about or an undescribed, never before seen species. As a young Foldscope scientists, early on, you should not worry too much about this fact – since you are making discoveries without others telling…

Use Foldscope in “Camera lucida” configuration – draw what you see

Foldscope is a stand alone tool; which can be coupled with a cellphone or other cameras to record what you see; but you DO NOT NEED a camera cellphone to actually experience the microscopic world. This is very important philosophical distinction that I have always maintained as an essential design element in a Foldscope. But…

Albatross bolus contents & Foldscope light source tips

After my last post, I started mulling over ways I could improve my Foldscope technique. Working with two cellphones allowed me to snap pictures, but the overall process was a bit finicky. I would turn the flashlight on one phone, placed it so the light beamed upwards, put the Foldscope so that the lens aligned…

Getting Started with my Foldscope

I’m happy to be joining the Foldscope community today! Having received one through a connection with one of my graduate professors, I can’t wait to take this bad boy out for a spin. While I’d assume everyone here has had the opportunity to put theirs together, for my first blog post I wanted to share…

Practical Resource – making a DIY, LED light source

Introduction:  A great microscopist once reminded me that: “you can’t see 100% of the photons that your illumination does not provide” (as an insightful corollary to the famous Gretzky quote: “you miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take.”) Said another way, your illumination determines what you can and cannot see. For this reason, this…

Question about High Magnification Lens

I have troubles getting centered image when using the High Magnification Lens. The image is always side-shifted and I don’t know if the problem comes from the lens assembling. On the other hand, with the LML the pictures are centered: All pictures are a fly wing.
