Life in a drop o water; secret handshakes

I love the secret handshakes every organism in this video has for one another. They all react when interacting to other organisms – but quiet differently. In the past we have discussed on toxins presented on the surface; but I had not appreciated the diversity of “reactions” a single felled organism would have when seeing many different species. Needless to say, this is an incredible diverse dataset. Let’s see how many species can you identify; please list in comments below.

Drama unfolding in a drop of water, images with the basic Foldscope. I love the specific interactions here – almost as if every pair of organism has a unique response to each other. It’s nothing short of a handshake. See how many unique organisms can you count in a single field of view. Many different ciliates, a few nematodes, Cyanobacteria, algae, moss and more… all within a short span of a minute. It’s an absolute joy to image in the field. The surprise of seeing something microscopic in the context of its environment. #foldscope #lifeinadropofwater #ciliatehandshake And now, almost anyone in the world can capture, wonder and comprehend this incredible beauty right under our feet.
