The worm amputated at the 30th segment is unable to regenerate their anterior portion even after 4 days of post-amputation .
We observed the free flow of coelomic cells in the regenerative bud. Also, we noted that the segment formation was initiated at 72 hrs of post-amputation by the differentiation of bud cells.
The regenerative buds grow by increasing its proliferative mass of cells. Interestingly, we observed the movement of cells in the left corner of regenerative bud.
Following amputation, the earthworm develops the regenerative bud by the proliferation of epithelial and longitudinal cell layer.
Mass of undifferentiated cells seals the wound at 12 hrs of regeneration in the earthworm.
To understand the regeneration ability of earthworms, the worms are amputated at 10th segment and documented.
The earthworm hatched from the cocoon is subjected to microscopic observation under foldscope. We observed the free flow of coelomic fluid in the coelomic cavity of the worm. The targeted drug (Triphala extract) is directly injected into the coelomic fluid so that it can be carried to all body cells of the earthworm. The interior…
Figure 2: The above figures (a, b) show the histology of regenerating worm. a.) Inhibition of regeneration was observed at a high dose of triphala (150 mg/ml). b.) Triphala in 10mg/ml concentration are able to induce the regeneration capability of earthworm on 6th of post-amputation. c.) The worm amputated at the 30th segment is unable…
Figure 1: The above figures (a-f) show the live tracking of earthworm at the different time point of regeneration (0th hrs, 12th hrs, 24 hrs, 48 hrs, and 72 hrs). At 72 hours the bud cells start to differentiate and initiate the formation of new anterior segments. Arrow denotes the amputation sites (10th segment).
Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of Sathyabama Institute of Science and technology has organized a one-day Science awareness program on ‘Foldscope Microscope assembly and usage for the School students’ funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India on 20-07-2018 at Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Sholinganallur, Chennai. The 10th to 12th standard school students got benefited…
