Sports Wrap Tape

The sample was obtained on May 29, 2019, at 1:00 am, from a roll of sports tape. A portion of the sports tape was ripped off and spread slightly apart, then put under the foldscope. The image under the foldscope showed many interlocking and intertwined threads of black lines. #caltechbi1

Grains of Sand

The sample was obtained from Huntington Beach on May 25, 2019 at 12:30 pm. The grains of sand under the foldscope showed many rock-looking black shapes. #caltechbi1

Tennis ball felt

The sample was obtained on May 28, 10:30 pm, from a Penn tennis ball. The felt was picked from the tennis ball and used as the sample. The image under the foldscope showed the strands of the felt, and also showed the neon color of the felt. #caltechbi1

Eraser Shavings

The sample was obtained on May 28, 2019, at 11:30 PM, by erasing some pencil marks with an eraser and getting the resulting shavings. The eraser was a Pentel Hi-Polymer Eraser. The picture under the foldscope showed many thick, black lines intertwining and connecting together. #caltechbi1

Rice flour under Foldscope

The sample was obtained on May 29, 2019, at 12:30 AM. It was retrieved from communal rice flour bag in Lloyd House kitchen. The foldscope picture shows many black dots variously clumped together, with a large foggy spot in the center, which may be a result of the poor camera quality. #caltechbi1

Buffered Electrolyte Salts

The sample was obtained at 9:30 pm on May 27, 2019. A salt stick cap was broken open and the powder was observed under the foldscope. Some molecules under the foldscope were clumped together more than others. #caltechbi1

Pollen from Purple Flower

The sample was obtained at 10:00 am on Monday, May 27, 2019. The sample was obtained from the Guggenheim building at the California Institute of Technology, on the South side of campus near East California Blvd. The flower had longer petals and was purplish-blue in color, with many of the flowers unbloomed in the shade….

Pollen from Orange Poppy Flower

The pollen was obtained at 12:45 pm on Wednesday, May 8, 2019. The sample was obtained from an orange flower, possibly a California poppy, located among several other of the same type of flower on Caltech’s campus in between Lloyd House and the Athenaeum.
