A Beautiful Blemish? BIO60_2019

Walking around campus, I was admiring the trees as I usually do, but this time I pulled a small, red leaf off of a tree near my house. I remembered Professor Cyert saying we need to find materials that are thin enough to see through, so I hoped this leaf would do the trick. I placed the little leaf onto a glass slide and viola! Using my phone and the foldscope kit light, I found a beautiful magenta stem and, even better, a gorgeous, gem-like looking blemish. From the naked eye, this spot on the leaf looks like some dirt or at least a dark spot that takes away from the leaf’s beauty. But via foldscope, its colors are impressive; there’s some gold, silver, and brass, all surrounded by a deeper red. Even its cell walls are pretty to look at! Bio60_2019
