Vorticella

I thought this little guy was a rotifer when I first saw it, but it was very small to be one. Then I started thinking that it could be a protozooan of the gender Vorticella and that made more sense.

These organisms live in fresh water and have cilia to get their food; they also have a stalk to keep anchored to the substrate.

    Yes, it was moving. Actually it looks so much better on a video because you can see how it moves the water with its cilia.

    That is so cool! I love teh currents that get swirling around them and when they retract by collapsing their stalks! Amazing little creatures.
