We should find some brittle stars at Hopkins (http://seanet.stanford.edu/EchinoHoloOphio/index.html#Ophiothrix) and see if we can image the microlenses found across their bodies (http://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlehtml/2004/jm/b402558j)

next time you run across some brittle stars and happen to have access to KCl you can trigger them to do a bit of bio-luminescence. I just tried it with one I found today in Oakland and it is magical!

That’s absolutely brilliant. I did not know either about brittle star bioluminescence or the KCl connection. Specially watching this under a microscope – I am curious if only a specific set of cells are bioluminescent.

What a wonderful note – and photograph. Loved your composite images..

      Cheers
