The organism is ellipsoidal with two incurved spines that nearly touch at their tips.

Epidinium lunatus in rumen fluid

Epidinium lunatus is smaller than the other species and has only one skeletal plate, have the same body shape as the epidinia and has a long tapering caudal spine.
