I have to say I’m a little frustrated with the assembly instructions – and there was nothing in the instructions that referred you to the on-line instructions. It was not clear in the instructions the difference between the ‘Lens Stage’ and the ‘Coupler’ – the instructions indicate they are 2 very different looking items. I guess at some point the device was updated to include a magnet to couple them – but the instructions were never updated to show that. Then I basically separated the ‘fold’ part of the focus ramp because from the pre-cut paper it looked like 2 different items. I taped them back together. Slide preparation is very poorly described. The ‘clear coverslip’ isn’t adhesive – or at least I couldn’t find anything adhesive so again scotch tape to apply the ‘coverslip’ to the slide. Also it is not clear from the instructions that you ‘detach the lens’ – insert a slide – ‘re-attach’ the lens – i guess – and finally – so far I have not had much luck viewing anything. Have to put it all aside for now because getting too frustrated playing with it…. all in all somewhat disappointed with this – particularly after reading the great write up in the NY Times.
I’m sorry to hear this. I understand your frustration, as our written materials may not (in isolation) provide needed clarification. A limitation of our production process is that we cannot easily revise our written instructions that come packaged with the Foldscope. We try to compensate as best we can with extensive online resources.
There are a number of potential errors during the construction process that could result in difficulty visualizing samples. Please post images of your Foldscope, front and back, if you would be willing. I’d be very happy to help you.
