Tagged: frustrated microprint slide fit

I am really keen on the idea (frugal science) and keen to show my children the world of microscopy. I wanted to jump right in so bought the assembled kit. However I’ve had a very poor experience so far!
While my kit has a sample provided on a glass slide (sadly not the most interesting subject – a fern rhizome) but there is simply no way the glass slide will fit through the loops in the foldscope.
I’ve watched the tutorial video (which I note is for a slightly different design) and read the instructions but the glass slide simply will not fit. It is considerably wider than the paper which came in the sample location with the foldscope. I cannot insert it slightly diagonally – it simply does not fit.
I was able to get the Microprint slide in (perhaps because it’s flexible) but what is the point of it? The foldscope needs a rear light source, but the microprint slide is metallic.
So far my experience has been such that I would not recommend this to anyone else.
It needs to come with clearer instructions, especially about the components of the kit. I am still keen to show my children something microscopic, but so far they’ve only read about it and watched me wrestle with the microscope itself!!
PS: The Plastic container holding the 3 glass slides provided is very difficult to open by hand. After removing the sticky tape I found it easier to use pliers every time I open it as the plastic tabs on the door are too tight.

Please provide clearer introductory instructions rather than forcing new users to hunter around and learn about the product. I realise this post sounds like I was impatient, but believe me I’ve spent time trying to get this to work.
The instructions should assume that new users may not know how fragile the foldscope is and if they didn’t assemble the foldscope may not know about features like the rear fold which clips magnetically to the lens area. They should detail how to insert a rigid sample, like the glass slides and explain what on earth the metallic microprint slide is for and how it’s used.September 22, 2021 at 11:52 pm #203992
Wordpress seems to be stopping me from posting more, which is sad because I have a partial solution to my problem:
This explains how to use the microprint slide – it neglects to mention that you need a very strong light source to see through it though: https://www.foldscope.com/user-guide/#microprintSeptember 22, 2021 at 11:55 pm #203993
The glass slides do not fit, but I’ve emailed the info address and they are working with me through the problem.
