 In the first Foldscope outreach programme carried out by us, St Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai, collaborated with the Teach for India Foundation (

 ) and conducted a ‘Health and Hygiene Workshop’ at the Worli Seaface BMC school run by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds study in these schools.


 The sophomore class of BSc Life Science students, as part of their ‘Microbes and Public Health’ course SLSC303, were asked to prepare short 10-15 min lecture- hands-on sessions for the school students on varied topics dealing with water and food-borne diseases and public health and hygiene. Foldscopes made a grand entry and were just the ideal tools to study microbes in a resource-constrained school. The students (and teachers) were excited to see and use a paper microscope for the first time in their lives. They eagerly awaited their turn to look through it and answered questions on health and hygiene. They themselves expressed an interest to test the quality of water from the school water purifier. That was a winner – to see their thirst for scientific exploration!


 The school was gifted 10 Foldscopes to use across their science classes.


 All in all, a very meaningful outreach session. The sophomores were sensitized to education in less privileged schools and got to actually apply their learning from classroom in a real life setting.


 The Foldscope PIs would like to thank members of the Teach for India foundation, Dr Nandita Mangalore, Dr Radhika Tendulkar, Dr Binoj Kutty and SYBSc students from St Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai, and the Principal, the staff and students of the Worli Seaface BMC school for their enthusiastic response and active participation, and for making our first Foldscope outreach programme a grand success. Outreach#1: Worli Seaface BMC School, Mumbai

 I hail from rural Karnataka, and hence, decided to take the Foldscope to schools in and around my native village. The villages are so disconnected from the arterial roads in the area that DHL charged ‘extra-remote delivery’ fees to delivery Foldscopes to Shirali. I also put together a kit consisting of Foldscope accessories that the students could use: a glass slide, forceps, scissors, cellotape and a dropper. My friends, Siddharth Baindur from Mumbai (Scientist, Biocon, Bangalore), and Hrishikesh Tavanandi (PhD scholar, CFTRI, Mysore) and his wife Anagha from Mysore, and my 74-year old mother joined me in this venture. They were all adept at conversing in Kannada, a must-have skill as the students we were going to interact with spoke and understood very little English. Hats off to their enthusiasm! Hrishikesh even suggested that we make large-size colour photocopies of the Foldscope assembly sheet so that we would be able to demonstrate the folding to a huge audience, and what a brilliant idea that was! I also carried my own laptop and a portable microphone-speaker system to facilitate easy instructing.


 We had a whirlwind 4-day tour, and were completely blown away by the enthusiastic and proactive participation of the students, teachers, school principals (and even our rented vehicle driver) in the sessions. One of the schools had just 1 functional(?) compound light microscope that was brought out only during the 10th class final examination. The students were not allowed to touch it, they were simply to identify its parts and their function from afar. The junior classes were not even allowed to see it. The Principal of that school had tears in his eyes when we gifted the school Foldscopes. He conveyed his heartfelt gratitude that his children (as he addressed his students) now would be able to study microbiology and not have to simply hear about it. (This very same Principal and his staff start their day at 5am daily, visiting the labourer and migrant worker parents in the village and nearby areas to ensure that they send their children to school, and not to work in the brick quarries nearby. What commitment towards education!)


 I can write a tome about my experiences on this outreach trip, but I will let the images and the video put together by Siddharth do the talking. Suffice to say that we all feel extremely grateful and happy at having enabled over 765 school students and their teachers in the tiny hamlets of Shirali and Mallapur in extra-remote Karnataka to view the microscopic world. It has been a very humbling experience and all of us came back with a feeling of immense gratefulness for the privileged education we have received in urban India. I must take this opportunity to thank Head Mistress Smt Mamata Bhatkal, Srivalli High School, headmaster Shri M T Gowda, Guruprasad High School, Mallapur, Shri Sujnan Baindur, Siddhartha Education Trust, Shri Mangesh Chickermane, Shri Narayan Mallapur and his team at Shri Chitrapur Math, Srivalli, for their unconditional cooperation and for facilitating our stay and food at the villages.  The aim of the project is to explore the variation in biodiversity of microflora and microfauna in different aquatic ecosystems using the paper microscope Foldscope. The changes in the type and abundance of microorganisms were investigated in still water systems of a water lily pond and a rain water harvesting pond at Maharashtra Nature Park, Dharavi, Mumbai. These were correlated to parameters like pH, temperature and seasonal changes in weather conditions to guage the effect of these on biodiversity.  The Foldscope is a ‘frugal science’ tool designed by Dr. Manu Prakash, Associate Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University, USA. It is an inexpensive, portable, light-weight paper microscope, small enough to fit into a pocket, and amenable with on-site field studies. The advantages and applications of the Foldscope will also be discussed.
 
 
 This project is funded by the DBT-PrakashLab Research Grant (Foldscope India Phase-I) of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.

Foldscope Poster Presentation: NSFLS 2019, Mumbai

 On 29th Nov. 2019, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Mumbai, organized a DBT-CTEP funded day-long science fair to showcase the undergraduate research work being done in college and the opportunities in science. More than 200 school and junior college students and accompanying teachers from South Mumbai (as also students from St Xavier’s itself, from the Arts faculty) visited the exhibition and were enthralled by the exhibits put up by the science students, and by the presence of science in day-to-day life in particular. Students of the Department of Zoology under Dr Sujata Deshpande decided to showcase the Foldscope as an educational and research tool. The stall was very well visited by the guests and was also appreciated by Dr Garima Gupta, Scientist E, DBT. 5 Foldscopes were gifted to the participating schools as a token of encouragemnet to inculcate scientific curiosity.
