 Coinciding with Adam’s and Thibaut’s visit to Chile, both from Prakash Lab, we conducted some foldscope workshops in rural schools in the south of Chile. That was our first experience with kids and exceeded all our expectations. The kids were amazing assembling the foldscope and were capable of taking amazing pictures with their phones. They were actually so astonished that they kept telling us that it was the best science class they ever had!

 However, not only them were amazed that day, but we were truly surprised by the capabilities of this young generation to help us. When we envisioned the MicroToxMap project, we thought that our main users would be professionals from different sectors. However, after this experience, we really think that students and schools are an amazing niche that can help us scientists in our endeavors.

 As scientists, we rarely have in our hands such an amazing tool that can inspire young ones to discover and understand the fast-changing world around us. From the MicroToxMap, we understand that is our duty to share this knowledge with them. We can’t wait for our next workshops with kids!

 Fjords are dynamic systems where the microalgae community can change in a day. In April, the Microtoxmap team and Adam and Thibaut from the Prakash lab, went to the Comau fjord in Chile to explore the underwater microcosmos using the foldscope.

<p>
 During the four days we stayed in the fjord, we could actually observe changes in the microalgae community. We detected some blooms of toxic microalgae (Prorocentrum cf. compressum) close to a shellfish farm and along a transect north towards the mouth of the fjord. However, after a day of heavy rain, these toxic blooms were fading. Salinity affects the growth of these microalgae and the heavy rain changed the salinity of the water in a few hours thus affecting the conditions for growing.

Toxic Microalgae in Chile&#8217;s fjords #fjordbiología #chilefoldscope #MicroToxMap

<p>
 We are working in a new set up to observe, record and identify phytoplankton using the foldscope. Here some pictures and videos of the prototypes  using capillary tubes, which will allow us to run through large water volumes without minimal preparation of samples.
</p>
<p>
 This work is carried out within the MicroToxMap project, a citizen science project for harmful algal bloom monitoring in the South of Chile. Thanks to the amazing help and enthusiasm of the folks at Prakash Lab, we are very excited to see what can we accomplish in the next weeks!
