Thysanoptera and other stuff.

<p>
 Well, some time ago I was experimenting with the foldscope LED position and their effects on a sample of water from irrigation canal, and I discovered that some rectangular things shine and change their colors, I ask to official Foldscope Instagram account what that things could be, and Manu said “that’s a diatom”.
</p>

 So this is all my diatom stuff, enjoy it 🙂

Illumination effects on unidentified diatoms

<p>
 Hace poco fui a una playa y conseguí muchas algas de una charca. La principal sorpresa fueron unos pequeños nudibranquios grises con verde, que saqué y puse en otro frasco con algunas algas.

 Eso es a nivel macroscópico. En una de tantas muestras que preparé encontré un gusano, el cual a simple vista no se veía interesante. No esperaba mucho, ni encontrar estructuras interesantes ni nada pero igual lo preparé y vaya sorpresa que resultó ser este poliqueto. Se pueden observar los cuatro ojos en la cabeza (algo que se me hace muy raro), sus movimientos, la circulación de los vasos capilares, las branquias, las quetas, simplemente genial.

 También vi cosas que no entendí y no pude relacionar con nada, como la corriente de agua que se formaba en algunos segmentos del gusano (minuto 2:40) y unos sacos con bolitas (minuto 4:14, glándulas?). En realidad no sé mucho de poliquetos jaja.

Gusano marino &#8211; Poliqueto

<p>
 Hace tiempo conseguí agua estancada en un drenaje, y tenía muchas larvas de mosquito. Además había algo flotando que desconocía y que resultaron ser puestas de huevos. Las siguientes fotos muestran una semana de desarrollo, en la que se vé como se forman los segmentos y la cabeza.

<p>
 Usar Foldscope con la cámara del celular es algo ya conocido, fácil de adaptar y permite a varias personas ver lo mismo, así como grabar y tomar fotos. Esas fotos y videos luego pueden ser vistas en la pantalla de una computadora.
</p>
<p>
 Pero lo que yo quería era observar directamente en la pantalla de mi computadora a tiempo real, por más comodidad. Es algo menos intuitivo. La idea principal del método que hice es usar la cámara del celular como una webcam para visualizar muestras en la computadora. La solución que encontré fue una app llamada DroidCam Wireless Webcam, que habilita la cámara del celular para tal propósito. La aplicación consta de una aplicación en el celular que realiza una transmisión HTTP que puede recibir un navegador concectado a la misma red, y un programa en la computadora que permite a programas como skype reconocer la transmisión como una webcam.

<p>
 El programa en la computadora está de más, no queremos usar el celular como webcam en skype, recibir la imagen de la cámara en tiempo real es suficiente. Sin dar más rodeos aquí una demostración del resultado:

 La interfaz de DroidCam permite zoom digital, cambiar la resolución y guardar fotos. No tiene la opción de grabar video pero en windows 10 la barra de herramientas de windows games (tecla windows + G) puede hacerlo sin descargar programas adicionales.

 Sería genial que Foldscope desarrollará algún software que simplifique la visualización en computadora sin recurrir a terceros, además de que podría ser más especializado pues estaría pensado para microscopia digital.

<p>
 Using Foldscope with a smartphone camera is a well-known thing, but with a computer isn’t (as far as I know). And I wanted to watch real-time samples full screen on my laptop.
</p>
<p>
 The main idea of the method I used is use the smartphone camera as a webcam to turn Foldscope into a Digital microscope. The app I found (and worked) is DroidCam Wireless Webcam. Just install on the smartphone and follow instructions. DroidCam create an http stream that can be viewed in a browser connected to the same network.
</p>
<p>
 The interface of DroidCam in the browser can do digital zoom, save photo and fullscreen with F11. Can’t record video but in Windows 10 the Windows games tool bar (Windows key + G) can record screen without download another software.
</p>
<p>
 The video shows the result with a sample of cianobacteria and rotifers.
</p>
<p>
 Anyway  would be great that Foldscope develop some software that simplifies computer visualization without need other softwares. I’m sure will be better than this temporal solution, and could be more specialized as it would be made for digital microscopy.
