Purpose
 


 To find structures that carnivorous plants may use to trap and kill insects.




 
 Problem
 


 I don´t know what structures do carnivorous plants use to trap and kill insects.


 
 


 
 Hypothesis
 


 If I use a Foldscope to see the inside of a carnivorous plant, then I will be able to find


 structures that carnivorous  plants use to trap insects.




 
 Materials
 


 -Foldscope


 -Slides


 -Light source


 -Pelican flower (
 
 Aristolochia grandiflora
 
 ), a carnivore eating plant.




 
 Procedure

 Find a Pelican flower
 </li>

 Cut the carnivore eating plant open, and collect specimens from the inside
 </li>
 <li>
 Put a sample of the carnivore eating plant in a slide
 </li>
 <li>
 Put the slide in the Foldscope
 </li>
 <li>
 Put the Foldscope in the light source
 </li>
 <li>
 Observe how the structures of the carnivore eating plant look like.
 </li>
 <li>
 Record your observations.
 </li>

 Results and Observations
 


 I noticed that the plant had a tube. When I opened it, I saw little hairs, so I put them in the


 Foldscope. The hairs looked like white filaments (Pictures 1 and 2). I think that when the


 insects go through the tube they get trapped because the hairs stop them from going back out.


 Then, from the  tube, they go to the inside of the plant. There I saw other hairs, but they were


 black. When I saw them in the Foldscope they also looked like filaments (Pictures 3 and 4), so


 I think that these filaments also trap the insects, but this is where they kill them so that the


 plant can eat them.

 Conclusions
 


 The hypothesis was correct. When I used the Folscope to see the inside of the carnivorous plant,


 I saw hair-like structures that may serve for trapping and killing insects.

 To tell the difference between dyed and non-dyed hair. To learn the effects of dyed hair.


 
 Problem:
 


 Could dyed hair end up being damaged?


 
 Hypothesis:
 


 If two types of hair are compared in the Foldscope then we will tell if dyed hair ends up damaged.


 
 Procedure:

 Analyze the two types of hair in the foldscope.

 Take photos of the hairs in the foldscope and compare.

 Take notes and draw conclusions.
 </li>

 Results and Observations:
 


 We saw in dyed hair many ruptures It seems unhealthy while the non-dyed hair was strong and healthy.

Dyed Hair Effects

PURPOSE
 


 To identify the parasites that are present in feces of cows, dogs and horses.


 
 HYPOTHESIS
 


 If the parasites are in the feces samples, then we can see them.


 
 MATERIALS

 Three samples of feces: one of a cow, one of a dog and another of a horse.
 </li>

 A Foldscope
 </li>
 <li>
 Two or three plastic slides
 </li>
 <li>
 A lantern
 </li>
 <li>
 One cell phone
 </li>
 <li>
 Warm Water
 </li>
 <li>
 Sugar
 </li>
 <li>
 Two containers
 </li>
 <li>
 A glass
 </li>
 <li>
 Two plastic spoons
 </li>
</ul>

 
 PROCEDURE
 


 First we have to grab one sample of cow’s feces. Next we have to put the sample of the cow, dog and the horse in different containers. In a glass put some warm water and four spoons of sugar. Dissolve the sugar in the water with a plastic spoon. Add some water with sugar in the containers with the different samples until the water reaches the top of the containers. Place an unnumbered transparent sticker on a paper slide. Flip over and put it on the top of the container of one sample were the feces is. Wait 15 minutes. Then cover sample with a numbered transparent sticker. Stack prepared paper slide on top of two other blank paper slides. Weave stack of paper slides through Folscope. A standard glass slide can be used instead of a stack of paper slides. To view, place eye on lens and hold the Foldscope up to a light source, such as daylight or artificial lighting. Finally with a cell phone take pictures of your final work.




 
 RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS
 


 When I checked the different samples of the feces of the horse, the dog and the cow, I couldn´t detect any parasite eggs, the only thing I saw was organic material present in the feces.


 Apparently the lens of the Foldscope got dirty and smudgy so we had to clean it because it was difficult to get focus on the different samples.

 CONCLUSION AND ANALYSIS
 


 -No eggs of parasites were observed in the different samples examined, probably because the animals were not parasitized at that time.


 -The Foldscope could be easily cleaned, but because of the type of simple I used it also got easily dirty and smudgy.


 -Any person can perform this experiment with knowledge of the different parasites in these animals.

Parasite Eggs

Purpose of the experiment:
 
 
 Determine if a rose’s leaf and petal share the same cells.
 
 
 Problem of the experiment:
 
 
 Does a rose leaf and petal share the same shape of cells?
 
 
 Hypothesis:
 
 
 If the Foldscope is used to observe a rose’s leaf and petal, then we will be able to determine whether they share the same shape of cells.
 
 
 Materials:
 
 
  Foldscope
 
  A healthy rose
 
  Plastic slides
 
 
 Procedure:
 
 
 A. Preparing the samples:
 
 1. Take a healthy rose, including its leaves.
 
 2. Cut a piece of its petal and prepare a slide sample with it.
 
 3. Cut a piece of its leaf and make another slide sample.
 
 B. Comparison of samples:
 
 1. Insert one of the samples into the Foldscope and observe. (you can smash a little part from the sample, if necessary)
 
 2. Record, describe or draw what you see.
 
 3. Insert the other slide sample into the Foldscope and observe again, you can also smash the sample a little bit if necessary.
 
 4. Record, describe or draw what you see.
 
 5. Compare both observations.
 
 
 Results:
 
 
 After conducting the experiment, I discovered that the rose’s leaf and petals had different kind of cells. Based on what I saw the leaf cells were rectangular (as in all the rest of the plants), while the petals seem to have circular cells.
