 I was looking at the outer skin of the onion also called tunic. I saw white rectangular shapes on it. I found out its called calcium oxalate crystals,  a colorless crystalline salt. I found many on the tunic of the onion.😀

 I first took a picture of the gingers outer skin.
 


 
 ~I took thin slices using a microtome and cut the inner layer of the ginger. I first took pictures of it unstained and then stained it with toluidine which is a dark blue stain. I let it soak for 2 minutes. As you can see there are yellow circular dots in the inner layer. It’s called Zingiberene. Zingiberene is a monocyclic sesquiterpene that is the predominant constituent of the oil of ginger, from which it gets its name. It can contribute up to 30% of the essential oils in ginger rhizomes. Then you can see blue clusters that are called xylem and phloem. Xylem transports and stores water. phloem transports sugar, protiens, and other organic molecules in plants.
 


 
 


 
 ~ when you look at the ginger you would never know that there were so many amazing things about it.

 Due to the early spring like weather flowers are blooming early. My sister took the pollen from the daffodil and put it on a slide. My father and I have found a way to project the pictures on the wall.

Pollen projection

Every morning I look outside and see the cherry blossoms, the beautiful flowers swaying in the wind and you can smell their scent (stench)  from a mile away.

 Now wouldn’t you want to take a closer look at these flowers? I mean we can clearly see the outside but what about the inside?


 I took a few flowers and decided to look inside them


 I took a slide and using forceps I took the anthers of the flower and crushed them to get pollen .


 I laid the pollen on the slide and inserted it into my foldscope.


 I personally love the imaging station I have because it makes taking pictures very easy.

If you walk around during spring time in Maryland you will see Daffodils in almost any residential area you go to.🏵

 This is a Daffodil. This Daffodil is Yellow and orange. The orange part of the flower is called the corona and the yellow is called the outer perianth.

 Daffodils are not native to Maryland or even North America. They are actually native to the Mediterranean and parts of Europe, and it is the national flower of Wales.


 These lovely bright and sweetly scented flowers are actually not as sweet as you think. Their bulbs (modified stem) and leaves are highly toxic and if you eat it your mouth will become numb. Which brings me to the Daffodil’s scientific name name, Narcissus.


 
 Narcissus has two meanings 1)
 
 numbness: if you eat the leaves or the bulb your mouth will become numb.
 
 


 2) In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a hunter from Thespiae in Boeotia who was known for his beauty. He was the son of the river god Cephissus and nymph Liriope.
 
 
 He was proud, in that he disdained those who loved him. Nemesis
 
 noticed this behavior and attracted Narcissus to a pool, where he saw his own reflection in the water and fell in love with it, not realizing it was merely an image. Unable to leave the beauty of his reflection, Narcissus lost his will to live. He stared at his reflection until he died.
 


 So back to the foldscope part of this project, I really wanted to take a closer look at this amazing flower. I wanted to look at the pollen of the Daffodil.  I  pulled the anthers off the flower using forceps, crushed them and then brushed the pollen onto a slide.

 I also looked at the corona of the Daffodil. The corona is the orange petals in the middle of the flowers. Their cells look like orange bubbles that are stuck together. I also feel their pigment is very beautiful and vibrant.

 Finally, I looked at the outer perianth which is yellow. When I looked at it through the foldscope I found that pigment much lighter than when you look at it normally with your naked eye. I also thought the cells looked like dried snake skin that had been shed.

Daffodil Dissection 🌻

For the 13 years that I have lived, I have never seen a flower so magnificent and eye  catching. I probably have seen this flower before but have not paid attention to it until a few days ago when I had this flaming motivation to figure out everything I could about this flower. Thanks to the app “like that garden” I could identify the flower as the candytuft Iberis

 Background:


 The candytuft iberis belongs to the Brassicaceae family.
 
 The name”candytuft” is not related to candy, but derives from Candia
 
 
 , the former name of
 
 
 Iraklion
 
 
 on the Island of Crete.  L
 
 
 eaves, stem and root of this plant are said to possess medicinal properties, but the seeds are most efficacious. The iberis are like evergreens and can survive long and harsh winters.
 


 Pollen: There were few pollen and they were grain shaped.

 Petals: The candytuft had many petals. What was most interesting about this plant was there were a bunch of mini flowers crammed together and the petals had a symeatrical pattern. 2 petals were big and 2 were small. When I looked at the cells of the petal I saw a bunch of symmetrical white balls glued together, which I thought was very cool.

Candytuft Iberis🌺

There are many beautiful flowers in Maryland. One of my favorites is the Marigold.

 I wanted to examine the petal of the flower. At first when I foldscoped the petal it was very hard to see because the cells were yellow.

 Then I added one drop of methylene blue and I let it soak for 30 seconds.

 And I got a brilliant picture of the Marigold cells. The methylene blue stained everything but the cell so it was easy to distinguish the cells.

 I was amazed by the difference between the methylene blue vs no dye. I feel adding dye makes it more fun and makes the clarity of the image better.

Marigold 🏵

My father and I went to Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh (India) to hold a foldscope workshop for rural kids at the

 </a>
 
 International Foundation (AIF) on the 11th of August. We went there with the wildlife expert Dr. R Bhanumathi.
 
 We had 36 people in total, 21 students and 15 teachers. We split the group into two: 18 with my dad and 18 with me. First they assembled the foldscope.

 After assembling the foldscope we looked at a variety of premade slides such as onion skin and dog intestine cross-section. They were so amazed when they looked at these sample for the first time.


 The particpants just didnt want to stop; some even didnt break for lunch. The participants then made their own slides and looked at a variety of samples like petals, pollen, dirt, leaves, rotifers, cheek cells, and ants.

 We took an hour to look at our own samples under the slides. Everyone wanted to see what the other had found and share the wonders they had seen under the foldscope.


 Sadly the day came to an end and every one had to go home, but everyone had learned something new and amazing that day.

 I find it amazing how every kid can see amazing things under the foldscope and how the foldscope can easily reach so many different people across the world. I had an amazing experience.

 The Canterbury Bells also known as bellflowers are absolutely beautiful. They come in shades of blues, purples, white, and pink.


 I first took a look at the sepal of the flower and noticed something very interesting. The sepal looked like it had hair on it. Just as Flies have protecting hair on its legs it looked like the sepal had tiny spikes that looked like hair on it so that it could protect itself.

 Next I took a look at the petals, and oddly the petals also had those had those cool spikes. I have never seen such a beautiful and unique flower.

 The pistol of the flower was covered in pollen dust, so it was really easy to get the pollen onto the slides. When I usually look at pollen their shapes are ovular, but with the bellflowers the pollen dust were perfectly circular

 I have never seen these features in any other flower I have ever looked at and as the weather gets warmer I am going to look inside many, many more flowers and see their unique beautiful features as well.
