There are many advertisements in the form of magazine booklets which come in the mail every day. Usually they just come and go in my house, but this time I decided to look at a sample from one under my Foldscope. I was expecting to see the one uniform maroon color I saw with my eyes. However, to my surprise, the result comprised of a spectacular array of various colors. There are small dots of color which make up the the one color we see with our eyes. I looked into this further, and found out that since the dots are too small to be seen by just our eyes, our brain blends the colors so that we see (or believe to see) one solid color. Next time you look at a magazine booklet, imagine the unseen wonders within.

Don&#8217;t judge a book by its cover&#8230;

Lint- The generally grey stuff that is left over after drying your clothes.  A few people compost it. Some others use it to start a fire, since it is highly flammable. To most people however, lint is just something you clean of the lint trap in your dryer and toss into a near by bin.  Looking at it under the foldscope, I was able to see the composition of the lint. Earlier, I referred to  lint as “stuff”. That was because lint is really a combination of many left overs. Some of these include cloth fibers, plant fibers, hair, dead skin cells, and dust (or pollen).

 It is a little hard to see with the pictures, but under the foldscope I was able to see different strands and pieces of materials , made into a dense cluster. I could even see the individual colors of different strands. These different strands are customarily seen collectively as some shade of grey.  Strands of hair could also be seen commonly.  When looked at under the foldscope, the cluster of lint seems reminiscent of a birds nest.

 Greetings Foldscope community! Thanks to supplies acquired at the national bioblitz held in DC earlier this year, we were able to conduct a foldscope workshop In Kerala, India this summer as part of our trip there. This post is a late in coming (as the workshop was held almost two months ago🙂), nevertheless, here it is-


 The workshop was conducted at Prem Nazir Memorial High School in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. There, the school selected 12 interested students and 2 teachers to participate in the workshop.

 A total of under two hours were given to conduct the workshop. The first five minutes or so were spent explaining the Foldscope.

 Then we moved on to giving out materials and demonstrating the assembly.  This inevitably ended up consuming the major portion of the time.

 Finally, we demonstrated how to make paper slides, viewing through the camera of a phone, and using pre-made slides. We also distributed the materials for a makeshift light module which consisted of a battery, a LED light, and tape. One of the great things about Kerala is that there is plenty of sunlight. The end of the workshop was given to test out pre-made slides at the windows in the room.
