For BIOE80 Class:
I originally wondered how can each hair strand be able to keep itself strongly attached to the scalp—one needs to apply a considerable amount of force to pluck a single strand off. To further investigate this question, I decided to apply the microscope to a hair strand I plucked off my head on the end that is connected to the scalp. I then obtained the following pictures of moderate resolution that allows me to observe the outline of the hair strand. I noted the rough surface of the strand as well as the bulb-like terminus of the hair strand. It was pretty cool to see an image at this magnification with a device with the thickness of a couple pieces of paper. Some further questions that I would still like to explore/see is what structure in the scalp holds the hair strand in place and is the source of the resistance during hair plucking. I am also interested in examining the surface of a hair strand at a higher resolution.
