The foldscope fellows in Indonesia finally held another workshop! This time, it is for the junior high school studens of SMP Kembang in Jakarta. SMP Kembang is one of the few primary schools in Indonesia which apply project-based and personalized learning approach as the curriculum, so they are really interested to learn about foldscope. The participants of this workshop are students with age group range from 12-14 years old.
Here are a couple of highlights:
While we were still helping some students with their foldscope, the other who finished earlier couldn't wait to use it so, before we could properly show them all how to collect and load samples, some went straight collecting grass and things and asked us to show them and when they did it, they taught the others how to do it. Yeah, the chaos started way earlier than what we imagine.
They took leaves, grass, dirt, water pool, and also dish soap from the school's backyard. Here are some of their results!
We ended the workshop by introducing Microcosmos community and demonstrating how to make a post here.
This was actually my first time running a foldscope workshop for teenage school students. Unlike younger kids, they were more self-directed and visually-literate in reading the instruction card, hence there was not much to explain because they could figure it out themselves somehow - eventhough at times they went a bit careless or impatient, but it's okay haha. So, the overall process was faster than the last time we run workshop for the elementary school students.
Thank you SMP Kembang, looking forward to your explorations and growth with foldscope!
Till next time!
