I completed this along with another 4th Grade Class.

For the "Hook" I asked students if they were a tiny bug, what would "this" look like to you? (I showed pieces of moss, flower petal, or grass, etc.)

I demonstrated the proper use for their foldscope-showed how to put a sample on their slide and how to hold the foldscope for best results.
Students were also told that they needed a light source to actually see their sample. We discussed the different light sources.

We then practiced using a strand of their hair.

Once students felt comfortable using their foldscopes, we went outside to explore. Students were encouraged to look for three samples to examine using their foldscope. They mostly used leaves, soil, and dandelions.

Students examined their three samples and illustrated what they saw in the foldscope. We discussed how the sample in the foldscope looked compared to the actual sample.
This will prepare them for additional lessons looking for more specific samples that align to our curriculum.
