My 6th grade students have been working on our unit Molecules to Organisms -Structures and Processes. Today we were able to run outside and grab a leaf off of a near by tree. We used the clear fingernail polish method to make an impression of the front and back of the leaf they grabbed. By doing this they were able to see the stomata on the back side of the leaf. We can even see some of the stomata with the guard cells closed. This was such a great moment when they realized this is how the leaves open and close and are allowed to take in carbon dioxde which is used for photosynethsis and release oxygen and water.
