I first started using the foldscope to examine the roots of a piece of moss. I wanted to see how fine the roots were and if there were even smaller microscopic roots that I couldn't see.
The roots didn't look as I expected initially. Instead of revealing other smaller roots, it shows the structure of the roots themselves, and it was cool to see the layers that go into the roots.

I also wanted to see if I could see smaller structures inside spiderwebs. I spooled off some of the web from between the bark of a tree and put it on the slide.
The spider web looked very different than I expected as well. It was very curly instead of stringy like the webs look to the human eye. I think part of this has to do with the way I collected the webs. I spooled them with a small stick and maybe tangled them too much. It would be interesting to try to capture some fresh and undisturbed spider web to see a more natural shape next time.
