LGP Day 2 - Exploring the microcosmic world

These are 50X, 140X and 340X magnified pictures of a cheek swab.

At 50x magnification, I saw multiple large, flat cells. I think these are epithelial cells, which make up the lining of the inner cheek. There were also some smaller, rounder cells, but it was difficult to identify them at this magnification.

At 140x magnification, the cells appear more detailed, and I noticed some variation in their sizes and shapes. I also saw the cytoplasm which is the jelly-like substance within the cells.

At 340x magnification, the epithelial cells were clearly visible. I could see the cell membrane and sometimes even the nucleus.

This is a picture of the cotton fabric at 140x magnification.

I saw some elongated, ribbon-like structures which are possibly the cotton fibers. The cotton fibers also had a slightly twister or wrinkled surface. This is due to the natural twist in the fibers and possibly some compression during fabric formation.

This is a potato sample under a 140X magnification.

At 140x magnification, I saw some cellular structures within the potato tissue. The cells had sort of a roundish shape and they were probably parenchyma cells - the most common type of plant cell responsible for storage and support in the potato flesh. The boxy shapes also have faint outlines, which are the cell walls surrounding the parenchyma cells. 

There were also some small, round structures within the cells. These could be starch grains, which are the way potatoes store carbohydrates.

This is a tomato sample under the 340X magnification.

In the sample, I observed many thin-walled polygonal shapes. These are likely parenchyma cells - the main cell type in tomato flesh responsible for storing nutrients like sugars and pigments.

The thin walls surrounding the cells are probably the cell wall or cell membrane which encloses the other components of the cell’s insides.
