My lesson plan is having the students use the foldscopes to look at 3 or 5 different things. We looked at grass, a clover, a flower, yarn, and a piece of hair. Then students would draw 3 circles on their paper and draw 3 of the items that they saw through the microscope.
Grades - 3rd-5th
Materials:
paper pencils markers/colored pencils/paint (something to add color) compasses or something to draw a circle

Overall I would say the activity was successful. I had a different idea at first for connecting the activity to the book Horton Hears a Who, but since it's the end of the school year we had a lot of interruptions that through off the scheduling, so I had to pivot. They all really enjoyed getting to see things under the microscope and understand what it was that they were looking at. This group particularly liked seeing their hair since it was something new. We also looked at a flower petal, yarn, and grass with this group. The yarn got a lot of interest as well since they could see the detail of how the yarn was woven together. I think in doing this again I will need to have more time letting them use the foldscopes first before trying to incorporate the art. Trying to do both on the same day made it difficult. But I was able to tie the concept to the element of texture in art which was very nice.
