From March 2–4, we had the incredible opportunity to lead Foldscope workshops across three schools in Nepal—Tribhuvan Adarsha Awasiya Secondary School and Orchid School—I, Ria Tamrakar, along with fellow Mercer University Stamps Scholars Prakriti Sapkota and Rajwol Chapagain. This experience was especially meaningful to us, as it allowed me to give back to the community and inspire young students to explore the world of science in a hands-on way.

Dr. Prakash generously funded half of the Foldscopes for our workshops, in addition to providing guidance and support throughout this project.

Over three days, we distributed 200 Foldscopes and worked with nearly 400 students (grades 6–10), guiding them as they built their own microscopes and got their first up-close look at the microscopic world. Seeing their faces light up as they observed slides for the first time was truly inspiring. More than just providing microscopes, we aimed to ignite curiosity and empower the next generation of scientists and problem-solvers.

I’m incredibly grateful to the Stamps Scholars Program for making this initiative possible, David Davis for his unwavering support, Dr. Manu Prakash for believing in our mission and introducing us to the Foldscope Instruments, Inc., and Rafikh Shaikh (PhD) Shaikh for guiding us through the workshop design. A huge thank you to Anusha Rajlawat‎, Komal Tuladhar, and Anish Panta for volunteering and helping make this outreach a success!

Excited to see how these bright young minds will continue to explore, innovate, and shape the future of STEM in Nepal!
