The first time using a foldscope, boy was it exiting. I was very nervous folding the foldscope, it is nerve-wracking slowly removing the components from the given sheet. Accidentally tearing the foldscope was the last thing I would want to do. Although it was frightening removing the components it was very satisfing to see the foldscope slowly come together. It is facinating that the experience given by the big bulky expensive microscopes can be given by a small relatively cheap microscope made by paper. The first sample we examined was an onion peel. it was fascinating to see the nucleus of a cell. The second sample was a potato. We smashed the potato and observed it under the microscope. It turns out that the cell of a potato does not have a nucleus. We also stained the samples which made the nucleus much more prominent and easy to spot. The foldscope plays a big role in making me go from hating Biology to loving it. I am exited to see what the next few days have for me and how I will use the foldscope. Even after the camp I would love to work with the foldscope.
