PhD candidate at Stanford University studying microbiology in extreme environments

A few weeks ago I was in Monterey for a dive course. My friend and I went to the beach in the evening to watch the sea otters. I mounted some marine algae that had a tough, rigid structure. It contained hundreds of these tiny red cysts. Does anyone know what they could be?
