After exploring Mary Oliver’s poem Fall to study rich metaphors, imagery, and onomatopoeia, my third graders took their learning outdoors for a fall nature walk. Students listened closely to autumn sounds and collected dried leaf samples to bring back to the classroom. Using their Foldscope pocket microscopes, they learned to identify the parts of the microscope and examined their leaf pieces up close. The hands-on investigation made them feel like real scientists while seamlessly weaving together reading, poetry, and hands-on science discovery!
