Using Foldscopes in my classroom has transformed the way my students experience science by turning everyday objects into opportunities for discovery. During our introductory use, students used their Foldscopes to examine human hair strands, carefully observing differences in texture, thickness, color, and structure. What seemed like a simple strand of hair quickly became a meaningful conversation about patterns, individuality, and microscopic observation skills. We also took our Foldscopes outside to investigate parts of nature, including leaves, flower petals, soil particles, and small natural materials found around campus. Students sketched their observations in their nature journals. Students were amazed to see details that are invisible to the naked eye, sparking curiosity, questions, and excitement about the world around them. The experience encouraged hands-on learning, collaboration, and scientific thinking while helping students connect classroom science to real-life exploration. It also inspired a cross-curricular collaboration with our art teacher, where students created landscapes and artistic pieces inspired by magnified images and observations captured through the Foldscopes. Through Foldscopes, my students were able to see themselves as scientists curious, observant, creative, and eager to explore the hidden details of the natural world.
