In our 6th grade class we study how energy is conserved through transfers and transformations in systems such as photosynthesis. As the students studied this system we were able to go even deeper with the help of the foldscopes. Students understood the process but they wanted to know more about how exactly the plant did this and what parts of the plants helped in the process. Through reserach we found that the stomata was the main player in this process. So we broke out the foldscopes! Students went outside and collected a leaf sample that they would use in thier investigation. In order to get a clear sample we utilized the process of painting on a thin layer of clear nail polish to the underside of the leaf, peeling it off when it was dry and using that as our sample to create our trading cards. Once the cards were created they inserted them into the foldscope and started to look. Students were tasked to see if they could identify the stomata based on the description of it from our lesson. They were amazed at what they saw! At the end they were given time to explore out in the garden space and pull samples of other plants to have a closer look at.
