The 7th graders at Hardin Park School made red onion slides and checked them out with the Foldscope Minis! They loved it. It’s important that the sample picked from the onion is as thin as possible. The red part of the onion will show very clear red pigment within the cells. Ideally, have them pick a thin slice of red and a thin one of the clear part of the onion for comparison. While half of the class made slides and used the scopes, the other half looked at prepared slides on compound microscopes around the room, made drawings and worked on a cells crossword (Contact me if you’d like the file). Then we flipped the groups. 90 kids at HPS will get to experience the fun and wonder of microscopy with Foldscopes.
