Seagrass bed harbours organisms like Amphipods, Isopods, gastropods.
Isopods are one of the most diverse crustaceans in terms of shape, size and habitats. They dwell in awide variety of habitats ranging from pelagic (free-swimming) to interstial spaces of sand grains and are often abundant in seagrass meadows. Some of them also live as parasites on other animals either temporarily or permanently. Half of the species of isopods are terrestrial and the other half being aquatic. Isopods are mainly detritivores,browsers, carnivores, parasites and sometimes filter feeders. Some of the marine species are actually wood-borers which in association with symbiotic bacteria are able to feed on cellulose of timber. Some of them live asparasites on Balanus perforatus (barnacle), ostracods, shrimps, crab, and some important commercial species offishes, eg., Lutjanus guttatus (spotted rose snapper). We collected isopod samples from seagrass bed sediments collected from Chilika Lagoon. On-board foldscopy was carried out to observe isopod samples.
