On 5 th January, Department of Environmental Science, University of Calcutta organised a workshop on The Capacity building to enhance apiculture productivity through melissopalynological training using foldscope in collaboration with Sundarban Green Environment Association at Kumirmari, Sundarban.

At 9 AM, local beekeepers of Kumirmari, attended the workshop.  Many beekeepers brought sample honeys in a sterilized container provided to them beforehand. The whole workshop was divided into three sessions.

1 st Session-

This session began with introducing foldscope to beekeepers and local people and its applications.

2 nd Session-

Slides containing pollen grains of locally available flowers were prepared and everyone observed pollen grains under foldscope.

In this session we introduced a Manual of Pollen grains for identification of nectar producing mangrove and other associated plants under foldscope.

3 rd session-

Slides of honey samples were prepared by dropping one drop honey sample and photographs were taken.

Everyone present at the workshop was very much interested to see the pollen grains present in their honey samples. The concept of uniflorate and multiflorate honey and difference in marketvalue of different types of honey were introduced.
