The images below show a microscopic visual comparison of eyebrow hair and hair from the head. I collected these samples from my own eyebrow and head (so these strands of hair are from the same individual), and mounted them using a wet mount slide technique. These two types of hair clearly have notable color differences, but it is also interesting to note the very different degrees of transparency between the two hair types: the eyebrow hair seems much more opaque–with no discernible difference between the outer layer and and the interior of the hair strand, whereas the head hair strand has a more transparent center. Such differences bring up interesting questions about if this is universally true for all humans, why this is the case, and if these differences indicate divergent evolutionary purposes for these types of hair.
