One year ago, Project SHINE (Sanitation Hygiene INnovation
in Edcuation) students in grades 6, 7, and 8 at the Sri Narayani Vidyalaya School
were introduced to the Foldscope. Today, they use Foldscopes to investigate a
mosquito’s mouth (proboscis) in order to understand the different
mechanisms behind a mosquito bite.
Project SHINE is a school-based intervention that uses participatory approaches in the classroom to teach students about water, sanitation, and hygiene. Students used Foldscopes in order to discover their natural creativity and curiosity and encourage future development of low-cost water, sanitation and hygiene strategies to alleviate health challenges experienced within their community.
