The following image is a picture of cactus hairs viewed under the Foldscope. The cactus hairs were collected by one of the professors for our class, presumably by snipping off different hairs from a cactus plant that grows in the Bay Area. To prepare the slide for analysis, cactus hairs were wedged between a glass slide and cover slip, and the light provided in the Foldscope kit was used to enhance the viewing quality under the lens of an iPhone camera. We are able to see the well defined structure of each hair, and hypothesize from viewing the image that the cross section of each hair is round if not spherical. These cactus hair look remarkably similar to human hair under the Foldscope.
