Sample obtained from the top tier of the Caltech Turtle Pond (Pasadena, CA) at 6:20 pm on 10 April 2019 via pipet from the slurry.
Pond Water – Small, dark organism moving through the bottom left corner.
Pond Water – Two semi-translucent organisms in the upper right corner. In these videos, three separate organisms of approximately the same form are seen to be in motion. In the first case, this single organism is moving quite rapidly and is difficult to observe, while in the second case, two slightly larger organisms of similar appearance move more slowly and fluidly around the obstacles of their environment.
With a foldscope magnification of 140x with the video itself at 4x magnification, these images total to 560x magnification. Judging by the approximately 1 cm length of these motile organisms in the image, we can conclude they are approximately 18-36 micrometers in length.
Due to the size of these organisms, they are probably eukaryotic but single cellular, suggesting they are protozoa. Further these protozoa may be among the amoebozoa or ciliophora; uncertain due to the poor resolution of the images.
