Bi 1: Foldscope Wet Samples

  • When: The picture was taken on Wednesday the 10th at 7:30 pm. The sample was taken a few hours (approx. 2 hrs) earlier.
  • The sample was taken from the Caltech turtle pond. It was extracted by scooping some of the pond water into a vial. This was then transferred to the slide with a pipette.
  • Description: In the image, we can see a small translucent bean-shaped object. In the video, this organism moved around freely in a small area. It changes shape slightly but not drastically. In some frames of the video there seem to be irregularities within the inside of the organism. These could suggest organelles.
  • Magnification of the Foldscope is 140x
  • In the image I took, the organism is around 2mm across.
  • Therefore the actual organism is around 0.014 mm across.
