The image shows a magnified view of a flower’s pollen. The sample was collected near the Turtle Pond on Caltech’s campus at 9:15 of the morning of May 1. It was obtained by brushing some pollen off of an anther onto a tissue paper, and later transferred to a slide for study with a foldscope. The pollen comes from a daylily (scientific name Hemerocallis). Daylilies are known for their attractive and colorful flowers; this particular one was yellow. They are perennial plants, and native to Asia.
