The flower of this plant was found on Caltech Campus at coordinates: 34.137106, -118.122357, at 12:30pm on 5/10/2019. The first image is the plant, later identified as a “Eschscholzia californica” but more commonly known as the “California Poppy”. The second image is the pollen that was removed from the flower and observed under a foldscope. To prepare the sample, a flower was removed from the plant, the bud was inverted and the anther and filaments were shaken above a slide to cause pollen to fall onto the slide. A cover slide was carefully secured over the sample pollen and the slide was observed and recorded using a foldscope-phone camera rig. Since the flower resembled a poppy plant, online resources made it easy to find possible species and identify the plant species as a
“Eschscholzia californica” via appearance of the flower, and the known habitat of the flower also confirmed the species.
