The picture is of a hairy extension found on the stigma of a purple flower. The hair is translucent, and perhaps is coated with a viscous liquid that traps objects like pollen (probably the faint yellow object close to the center) in order to feed the pollen into the pistil. #caltechbi1
The sample was taken at approximately 3:30 pm on May 30, 2019 on the south side of the Caltech Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology. The sample was obtained by removing a flower form the tree before carefully extracting several hairs from the stigma, placing these on a clean sample slide. #caltechbi1
