This image depicts the surface structure and texture of the white flower’s filament. The lines traversing the filament indicate the more rigid and patterned structure familiar in most plant structures. Water droplets can also be seen as the sample was fresh, and pressing the sample between the slide and cover slip extracted the water from the sample. #caltechbi1
This image depicts the surface texture of the white flower’s petal. As can be carefully observed, the petal has a microscopically rugged texture though its appearance to the naked eye is rather smooth. The structure seems to be rather different than the structure of the filament. #caltechbi1
These samples were taken at approximately 6:00 pm on May 30, 2019 near Chandler Cafe on the walk to Page House in the Caltech Campus. A single flower was carefully removed. The filament was first carefully pressed and flattened before placing onto the sample slide under the cover slip. After cleaning the sample slide with acetone, the petal was then placed and viewed under a clean cover slip. #caltechbi1
