Image 1. The pepper sample with a medium-light background.
The salt sample was obtained from a 1.25 oz Market Pantry branded ground Black Pepper container at 9:46 p.m. on Friday, May 31 at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.

Image 2. The pepper sample with a light background.
Both images show a variety of shapes and colors of the sample, showing the variety of ground pepper. This is likely due to the process of grinding peppercorns, where the grinding process isn’t meant for precision. Shaving off edges of the exterior of the peppercorn would look different than large chunks from the interior. The lighter colors of certain parts of the sample could be due to variations in the color of the peppercorn itself or from different amounts of light transmitting through the sample. #caltechbi1
