SPECIMEN: Roho labeo fish
SPECIMEN OBSERVED AT: CMR National PU College at ITPL, Bangalore on 2nd July 2019
On 2nd July I observed various parts of a fish I purchased from a nearby shop. Under the foldscope I observed the minute details of each and every component I used and this broadened my knowledge about them.
The fish I used is called rohu, Scientific name: Labeo rohita. It is a large, silver colour fish of typical cyprinid shape. It’s found in rivers throughout much of northern, central and eastern India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar. This species of fish is mostly grown for consumption.
Barbels – Usually Rohu does not have barbels but some species do. A barbel is a slender whisker like sensory organ near a fish’s mouth. They are mostly used by fishes to help them smell. Under foldscope I was able to observe one long thread of barbel. It was red in colour divided into various segments.
BARBEL OF ROHU FISH 2. Scales – The scales of Rohu was very hard to cut. The scales are cycloid and ctenoid. Under foldscope the scales appeared to be in an irregular shape mixed with a few tissues and blood vessels.

SCALES OF ROHU 3. Tissue- The flesh of Rohu is white, tender, smooth in texture and mild. The tissue under foldscope looked white nearly colourless.
