As part of the elementary (grade 8) and secondary school (grade 10, 11, and 12) curriculums in Ontario, Canada, students are to differentiate plant and animal cells by using a microscope. This becomes difficult in situations where there are one or two microscopes for a class of 24 students. With the foldscope, students were able to get much more hands on, and take pictures with their smartphones of their discoveries! Here is an example of the classic test in microscopy, the onion cell, through a foldscope. Further classroom integration posts are on their way!
