With the foldscope, I took samples from local preservation near my house (The Billie Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve). I took samples of the green growth on the surface of the water. After placing the samples on the slide, and viewing it, it became clear that this was Duckweed growth.
The second plant also appears to be budding! With the daughter plant coming off of the parent plant in the bottom right. There also appears to be a second daughter plant still inside the budding pouch in the parent plant. I am curious if the plant was budding because there is still growth occurring in the lake, even this late in the fall, or if, because I brought it inside with warmer temperatures, it started budding. I am inclined to believe the former, but further research would need to occur to understand population growth rather than individual plant growth.
