I was born and grew up mostly in Germany. I studied biology and did my PhD in parasitology, exploring the malaria liver stage. Work and love made me move to Melbourne, Australia, where I spent 7 fantastic years as a postdoc – still working mainly on malaria. In 2015 I brought my family with me back to Europe and we are now living in the Netherlands. We have a 4-year-old son who already enjoys nature and wants to know everything. Now, with the foldscope I can show him a whole new world that he was, until now, unaware of.

Hi everyone,
We are new here and this is our first post. My son and I have been experimenting for the first time with the foldscope. We have looked at dust and fluff, which was very abstract for him. Then I thought we would start easy and look at some red onion skin – nothing new for anyone who has done microscopy at school, however incredibly exciting for a 4-year-old! He was running around shouting “I can see the red, I can see the red!” I was also really impressed by the quality of the picture I was able to take, which is why I wanted to share them. I did however take these directly as the magnet strip is not working for me (possible because with an iPhone the camera is not easy to cover with the strip).
I am looking forward to many more fantastic experiences together with my son and the foldscope!
