These are some pictures of songbird and seagull feathers. Extending from the quill are barbs. Extending from the barbs are barbules. On some barbules are hooks (look closely at picture 1!) that grab on to each other exactly like Velcro. This holds together the barbs, which holds the entire shape of the feather.
