I had the opportunity to make my very own Foldscope thanks to my college ecology class. The process of building it brought me back to my childhood memories of folding planes and hearts out of origami paper. Once built, I was amazed at what I realized was the tiny lens, as well the clever ways through which you can focus your image.
For my sample, I chose to pick up one yellow leaf out of many that I found littered on the ground. To my surprise, it showed up as green through the Foldscope. Getting this photograph was a bit of a struggle, as my phone’s camera was not well suited for the foldscope’s coupler.
I believe that the little circles we see in this image are stomata!
