I conducted this project as part of
Professor Pringle’s EEB321 class at Princeton University. When I realized that we would each be using and keeping our own foldscope, I was elated. The folding process took quite a bit of time and careful folding, but I really enjoyed it. I have issues with mobility in my hands sometimes, but it wasn’t too much of an issue.
For my sample, I just took a tiny piece of a piece of grass from outside of the Lewis Library. I wasn’t expecting to be able to see so much detail, but I think that you can see the rows of cells in the sample, which is really cool. I wonder if there’s a way to see even closer in the sample, our group placed a flashlight underneath the foldscope and then our phones on top to take a picture, and I think it made it much clearer. What other things would make good samples?
