After running into some difficulties learning how to work my Foldscope, I finally figured it out! I took a photo of some plant cells, which was quite beautiful. However, I wanted to take a look at something that is a part of my every day life. So I took a sample of my own hair! I was worried I’d see some damage: split ends, raised cuticle, breakage, etc. But after playing around with various settings on the Foldscope, I am happy to announce my hair is doing just fine. Seems like my deep conditioner really is doing the trick. It was really cool to see all the lines and bumps on the cuticle, which made my hair look almost like tree bark. I tried my best to capture a photo of my hair, so hopefully you can get an idea of what I’m talking about. I wonder what dyed hair might look like under the Foldscope- probably a lot more bumpy and full of cracks! I conducted this project as part of Professor Pringle’s EEB321 class at Princeton University.
